I Want to Hear That Song

That song that you speak of

I would like to hear it too.

It sounds beautiful and harmonious;

It sounds like peace and equality.

Nothing like what I hear today.

The vile words spit from the mouths of monsters

Telling me I don’t belong,

Telling me there’s something wrong with me,

Their taunts and teases and lies and conspiracies,

That’s what I hear.

That song that you speak of,

Where everyone gets along,

Where everyone has a place,

I would like to hear it too

But I can’t.

Not over the cries of pain from those like me,

Or over the funeral hymns being sung every day,

Or over the police sirens that spark fear within me,

Or over the screams of those fighting for justice,

Or over my own personal struggle.

But maybe one day they’ll see,

That the world is better when we’re together.

That with my brilliance and strength and with theirs,

We’ll truly create a place where everyone belongs.

Until then I can only watch and wish:

If I could trade my nightmare for your dream,

If I could trade the cries for laughter,

If I could trade my song for yours,

I would.

I want to hear that song you speak of.
