When I Was Older

Leila W.

When I was older,
taking a step back into my future.
Who I am to become
has everything to do with who I am now.
Who I choose to be around me,
every turn and step -
every yes and no,
is a puzzle piece of who I am to be.
I build me.
I build who I will be.
Don’t try to help me decide.
Because you are not me,
and you will most definitely not make me into something I'm not.
I won't let you control me.
I won’t let you turn me into something I'm not.
I won't let you turn me into an “achievement.”
Or a medal you can place on the shelf.
I will build me,
and I will do it without you.
